What Are The Foundations Required For Optimum
Health and well-Being?

What Is Health?
Health is a combination of six basic areas that depend upon each other for
an overall balanced lifestyle and good health. So what are these vital
elements of health?

Your Thoughts and Emotional Well-Being
We know we need to think positively but how do you actually do it if things
aren't quite as rosy as you would like? If you need help to think positively
you could listen to motivational CDs and reading books but upbeat music
can be a great "feel-good" tool, too. Listen to music or recorded books by
your favourite authors while driving rather than commercial-laden radio
which dulls the senses and drains your emotional well-being.

Breathing
Did you know the way you breathe affects every part of your body? Most of
us tend to breathe orally because this is a learned response. Clinical
studies show, however, that we start life as nasal breathers which is
optimum for your good health and well-being but this changes over time.
Oral breathing, unfortunately, increases your adrenal response which can
elevate your levels of stress hormones. So, in order to breathe more
effectively for good health practice deep diaphragmatic breathing through
your nose. Sports professionals recommends deep breathing is a great way
to begin each day. Go for a walk in the park, find a quiet space, close your
eyes and breathe deeply through your nose for five minutes. Slowly count
to four then breathe out slowly. Easy!

Hydrate Your Body
Your body is mainly made up of water which is used for different body
processes, promoting optimum health and maintaining a stable environment
for cellular function. When well-hydrated, your cellular function works to
eliminate toxins and waste products as well as providing nutrition for growth
and renewal.

You can be dehydrated by drinking too much alcohol, coffee or sugar soft
drink as well as not drinking enough fresh water during the day. It is
recommended you do not drink water from plastic bottles to avoid the toxins
and chemicals leached from the plastic into your drinking water. Good
health means safe, natural products! It's also better for our environment to
reduce such pollution, too.

Good Diet and Nutrition
We all know it's so important to eat well. This means eating living food and
eliminating highly processed, treated and chemically-laden products. Our
bodies developed eating very simple food and the truth is that your body is
not designed to survive or thrive on refined foods. It is for this reason
adding more fruit, vegetables and proteins  with less sugar, added fats or
preservatives will mean better health and well-being for you. Avoid sugars
and artificial sweeteners which trick your body into craving more sugar and
increase feelings of hunger.

Exercise and Activity
Get Moving! Just walking half an hour a day can increase your sense of
well-being, increase metabolic rate for improved weight loss and better
muscle tone. Technology has meant we no longer move our bodies as
much as we need to for good health and has caused our sedentary life style.
Consequently, we are getting fat, lazy and sick. We need to move and
exercise every day, not just three times a week! Simple things like hanging
out your washing is as good for your sense of balance and muscle tone as
doing tai chai and saves on electricity bills. Once you start exercising, you
will feel the health benefits and improved sense of well-being.

If you are concerned that you haven't worked-out for a while you can
consult with your doctor or a sports therapist to help get you started.

Rest and Relaxation
It seems that medical research is right! You really do need six to eight hours
sleep every night for good health and mental alertness. One day a week
keep your exercise to light, fun activities such as surfing or a stroll in the
bush or park.

Meditation is another great way to get focused rest. Research shows that
20 minutes of breathing exercises and meditation every day can reduce
your stress hormone levels and significantly increase your mental focus,
energy and endorphin hormone levels for positive thoughts and increased
sense of happiness.

This is because your mind and body need time to recover. Stress, overwork
and a busy lifestyle can expose your body to potential injury and reduce
your immune system's ability to cope, thus increasing your risk of illness.

Good health relies on a healthy life-style.
